Over the years, as all us modelers tend to do, I have managed to collect a large amount of reference material to help with detailing my projects. This can be in the form of good 'ol fashioned books & magazines, videos or dvds and with the growth of the internet images found on the web.
To find good reference material on the web all that is required is to put the name of the car you are going to build into a search engine (such as google) and go to the images results page and there you have it. Some subjects are harder to find though and I find the modeling forums such as F1M and AutomotiveForums invaluable when it comes to asking for advice on where best to find references. There are also a growing number of websites purely dedicated to reference pictures, GurneyFlap being one of the best.
There are now numerous books and magazines available which are purely designed for modelers wishing to add detail to builds and contain photographs of areas of cars that you wouldnt normally be able to find images of (publications such as F1 Modeling, Formula Analysis and the Perfect Manual series for instance).
There is a company called Motorsport in Detail who sells CDs on specific cars containing lots of images of the particular car, these are also good however you have to pay for each CD and I have found on the two CDs I have bought that some of the images on the discs are freely available on the internet anyway.
My Rally Car Magazine collection which is currently over 60 models in total is now complete, I really recommended this collection as the cars are suprisingly well detailed and accurate, the magazines that come with the models are also extremely helpful for details on the cars.
GOODWOOD
However, nothing quite beats going to an event and taking pictures of cars yourself. I am fortunate to live close to Goodwood and as such manage to attend the Festival of Speed every year which is guaranteed to have interesting cars on show.
